Holiday Hoops Recap Day 3: Jackson State rallies and an All-Tournament Team

The last game of the 2018 Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classics started out as a close battle between Jackson State and UIC until the end of the third quarter when JSU came from behind and took the 72-57 contest from the Flames.

Early on, Jackson State had the upper hand, racing out to a 12-6 lead and then outscoring the Flames 17-11 in the first quarter with junior forward Marneisha Hamer leading the way.

However, UIC was undaunted and flipped the script in the second quarter with senior guard Brittany Byrd taking charge for the Flames. Her squad led 28-27 at the half after outscoring the Lady Tigers 17-10 in the second ten minutes. Byrd topped all scorers with 11 at the break.

UIC earned a four-point lead early in the third quarter, 32-28 at 8:37. However, JSU began to come alive and the teams were tied at 8:09 and went back and forth until the Lady Tigers finished the quarter on a run and with a 47-43 lead.

JSU dominated the last period with a 25-point offensive output compared to UIC's 14 points.

Hamer, who made the All-Tournament Team, led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Kaisah Lucky had a great game with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Fellow junior guard Sumer Williams was also in double figures with 10 points.

Byrd paced her team with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Taylor Toney added 13 points plus rebounds while sophomore guard Kiarra Thompson contributed 10 points and four rebounds.

Both teams left the tournament 1-1.
