MILWAUKEE, WI — The University of Illinois-Chicago scored 42 second half points and overcame a two-point halftime deficit to beat Stephen F. Austin 73-64 in the 2014 Women’s Basketball Invitational Championship game on Saturday (Mar. 30). The win was the school-record 26th for the Flames and the win marked a second consecutive WBI crown for the Horizon League (Detroit, 2013).
Senior Rachel Story led all scorers with 27 points in the title game while tournament MVP Ruvanna Campbell poster her fourth double-double of the tournament with an 18-point, 12-rebound, and eight block (WBI record) performance. Porsha Roberts led the Lady Jacks with 21 points while Tierany Henderson added 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
SFA shot 50% from the field in the first half in taking a 33-31 lead into the break at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. However, UIC turned the tables in the second half and shot 50% from the field while holding SFA to 37.1% shooting. UIC also dominated on the glass in winning the rebound battle 43-33. UIC ends its season 26-9 and owners of the best women’s basketball turnaround in 2013-14. Stephen F. Austin ended its campaign with a 23-13 mark.
Campbell was joined on the All-Tournament team by UIC teammates Story and Katie Hammenann. Roberts was named to the squad from SFA wile Fairfield’s Katie Cizynski and Charleston’s Alyssa Frye also earned All-Tournament honors.
